In this Year of the Arts, we honour the vital role of artists in the lands often known as Newfoundland and Labrador. Gather highlights this province’s growing creative community, which is rooted in close-knit ties and a strong sense of place. Artworks by beloved figures sit alongside recent and newly commissioned pieces, reflecting the importance of intergenerational conversations. Throughout, Gather is rooted in the many ways art brings us together—whether in celebration, remembrance, or solidarity.
About the Curators
Rose Bouthillier is a contemporary art curator and writer based in Maberly, NL. She currently serves as the Artistic Director of Bonavista Biennale.
Mireille Eagan is Curator of Contemporary Art at The Rooms.
July 2 - 21, 2024
As part of our summer film series curated by Ossie Michelin, the film Je m'appelle Humain/Call Me Human (2020) will be shown from July 2 to July 21. Created by Kim O'Bomsawin with Terre Innue, the film narrates the journey of Innu poet Joséphine Bacon as she passionately champions the revitalization of Innu culture and language, and delves into the profound impact of the loss of Elders on the preservation of the past. Watch it on level 3 inside the exhibition gather. Runtime 52 minutes (running on a loop).
July 22 - August 25, 2024
As part of our summer film series curated by Ossie Michelin, the film Voices from the Barrens: Native People, Blueberries and Sovereignty (2020) will be shown from July 22 to August 11. Directed by Nancy Ghertner, the film shows people from the Wabanaki, Mi'kmaw, and Maliseet Nations cross the Canada/US border to take part in the world's largest wild blueberry harvest. Watch it on level 3 inside the exhibition gather. Runtime 56 minutes (running on a loop).
August 26 - September 22, 2024
As part of our summer film series curated by Ossie Michelin, the film Beach Heart (2021) will be shown from Sept 3 - 22. The film shows creator Glenn Gear visiting his mother’s favourite sites around the Bay of Islands (NL) in his time of isolation seeking reflection and hope. Beach Heart is Gear’s love letter to his mother, the sea, and the sky—from Corner Brook to Bottle Cove. Runtime 2 minutes and 5 seconds.
